The Differences Between Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin

Botox TreatmentsBotox is the most famous and well-known neuromodulator, but there are two other options to choose from as well – Dysport and Xeomin. All three of these neuromodulators are very similar and will smooth your wrinkles – so what's the difference between them? At Cosmetic Laser Dermatology, we offer all three options, but we don't want you to be confused when choosing the best way to reduce your dynamic wrinkles. Here are the differences between these three neuromodulators.

Formulation of Neuromodulators

Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin all use botulinum toxin type A as their base ingredient, which works to block nerve signals to the muscles which contract causing wrinkles. Each one is very effective for treating dynamic wrinkles, also known as expression lines, such as crow's feet, frown lines, and forehead lines. The difference is just how the botulinum toxin type A is packaged.

Botox and Dysport both use formulations that surround the toxin with proteins to provide protection while the product is in the vial. Xeomin, on the other hand, is a "naked" formulation without any added proteins. Botox and Dysport are considered "heavier" than Xeomin because of this.

Migration of Neuromodulators

There is much debate about what, if anything the proteins that surround the botulinum toxin A molecule do once the product is injected into the body. Most studies suggest that there is no change in any characteristics regarding diffusion, onset of effect or lasting effect. But, each person may react a bit differently to each of these medicines.

It is very important to choose an expert injector familiar with all three types of neuromodulators. While Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are each highly effective for treating dynamic wrinkles and can achieve the same effects in the hands of the right dermatologist, making them essentially interchangeable, their slight differences mean that the dermatologist needs to be very experienced and know the best injection points and concentrations for each one.
